Handmade by the Amazigh (Berber) women from the ethnic group of Ait Khabbash, south east of Morocco. It is 100 % hand made from wool. This beautiful flatweave consists of traditional sets of patterned bands with beautiful natural colors that the Amazigh (Berber) people of this part of Morocco are well known for. This shawl is also called taghnast from the verb ghans and it means to cover in Tmazight language (Berber), another Amazigh/Berber name for this shawl is. Some may call it handira which is a term that derives from the Tamazight/Berber word tahandirt and it is adopted from the Tamazight (Berber) language by Arabic speakers. This textile is used daily by the Amazigh (Berber) women in the mountains an the south eastern desert while in their tents and while they are herding their animals. This Taghnast or tahandirt is antique and has some ware (see bottom left corner), This Wear and tear naturally and inevitably occurred as a result of normal daily use by the Amazigh woman who formerly owned this shawl. Because of having been used as a shawl, two corners end over the shoulders and two corners end low towards the feet and while the woman who used it was walking the lower corners could touch things and some wear and tear can occur and in this case this textile has a little wear seen in front of the arrow at the top left of this picture and that corner of the shawl would have been the bottom left of the shawl when worn and is looked at from behind the person wearing it. It is sold in its current condition as an old textile.
